The awarding of honours is based on the student's program weighted average mark, which is a weighted mean of course marks, with the weights wi being:
General Education: 1, Year 1 courses: 1, Year 2 courses: 2, Year 3 courses: 3, Year 4 courses: 4.
The formula employed is:
WAM = ( Σ mi.wi.ui ) / ( Σ wi.ui )
For each course i having units of credit ui and mark obtained mi.
Example: if Gen Ed average (of 12UOC) = 60, Year 1 average (of 48UOC) = 60, Year 2 average (of 42UOC)=65, Year 3 average (of 42UOC) =72 and Year 4 average (of 48UOC) = 83 then the honours WAM will be
(60*1*12 + 60*1*48 + 65*2*42 + 72*3*42 + 83*4*48) /
(1*12 + 1*48 + 2*42 + 3*42 + 4*48) = 73.74
The example assumes no exemptions. If certain courses from a given year are exempted, those courses will be excluded from the formula.
Only first attempt marks are considered. Courses taken outside this university are excluded from the calculation.
The minimum program averages for various honours grades are:
Hons I: 75
Hons II/1: 70
Hons II/2: 65
The Honours calculation will be the same as for the standard BE (Chem) program, with the same weighting for each course (subject) as in the standard B.E. program, except that:
• For stage 4, any standard program course that is missing from the standard BE (Chem) program will be assigned the UOC weighted average mark of the 4th Year Biomedical electives and the Biomedical research project (both parts)
• General education is calculated in the same way as for the standard program (with reducedUOC)
The Honours calculation will be the same as for the standard BE (Chem), BE (Ind Chem) program (henceforth called the “standard single degree program”), with the same weighting for each course as in the standard single degree program, except that:
• Courses that appear in the standard single‐degree program but not on the double degree program will not be included.
• Courses that appear in the double degree program but not on the standard single‐degree program will not be included, except for the clear substitutions. For the purpose of honours calculations, all courses are weighted according to the year prescribed by the standard single‐degree program.
