FAQs

How much Chemistry and Physics are involved in Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry?

All first year students are required to enrol in Chemistry, Maths and Physics classes. These courses are pre-requistes for later year courses in the program.

The assumed knowledge for these courses are HSC 3 Unit Maths (or equivalent) and HSC Physics (or equivalent).

Can i transfer into chem eng/ind chem/food science after completing a year in a different program?

Yes. You must still meet the minimum requirements for entry into the program, but many students choose to transfer into a different program after one year of study.

Students who are enrolled in the Flexible First Year Engineering program can enrol straight into the 2nd year of study. Students who have not completed the pre-requisite courses must enrol in those first.

What is the male/female student ratio?

The student ratio is approximately 2:1 male:female, the highest of any engineering school at UNSW.

how many gradautes find full-time work after finishing?

Nearly all of our graduates find jobs immediately after graduation, if not before. In 2011, a Sydney Morning Herald Survey listed Chemical Engineers as the third highest graduate salary.

Many of our graduates also choose to go on and do further postgraduate studies and research.

Chemical engineers are often referred to as 'universal engineers', what does that mean?

Chemical Engineering is one of the broadest engineering qualifications available. As such, our graduates are able to move into many different fields such as: water treatment and management, food process, environmental management, energy and petrochemical industries.
